Ornament Art!

My aunt just messaged me this cool art idea that could be done (slowly) in a primary (or even intermediate, I guess?) class.

You start out with normal glass ball ornaments. You can get them pretty much anywhere (Costco, Walmart, Target...).

Now, this part would take a long time because you'll probably want to do this step one student at a time. You paint a student's entire hand (left or right) with white finger paint and have them grip the glass ornament from the bottom. It HAS to be from the bottom in order to achieve the desired effect for the end product. Also, make sure your students' fingers are spaced out appropriately, not too far but not too close either. Tell students to wash their hands ASAP.

Once you've completed this step with all your students, wait a day for the paint to dry. Don't forget to put their names on them when they dry.

On the next day, have your students draw faces on the tips of their painted ornaments and make little scarves to put around their necks. Encourage your students to add any other decorations that can think of for their snowmen ornaments. E.g: dots of white paint for snow, something for arms and their noses, etc...
The end product is an awesome little art activity that your students can bring home and hang and show their parents!

  1. I love this idea! I love art activities that students can bring home and can actually be used for years to come. Often students bring home art that is put up on the fridge for a couple weeks and then is tossed in the recycling bin or garbage. With a project like this a student can have something that is brought out every year which will give them a sense of pride. Love this and I definitely would like to do this in the future, thanks for sharing Alex!

    1. No problem, Jordan. Thanks for commenting! Yeah, the best kind of art activities we do in the classroom, I find, are the ones that last a long time at home. They bring back great memories and make for nice little stories. :)

  2. My boys made these in pre-school and they are so cute! We put them up on the Christmas tree every year! There's also a little poem tag that goes along with it...if my Christmas ornaments weren't all packed away I'd dig it out for you and add it here. Sorry. They are going to remain in storage a few weeks longer! ;) I think it would be a fun project to do with primary students!

  3. I agree that it is worthwhile to use art to "make memories" - when my class chose to be the Husky Team, I invented husky face ornaments made of black and white pompoms made on a fork, then glued on felt. Googly eyes, a tiny plastic nose, and a red ribbon bow made them look so special. I still have one for my own tree and I imagine there are others that have become family treasures by now!
